Understanding HIFU: What to Expect Before, During and After Treatment

By the Derma Care London Clinical Team 7 min read

High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound, better known as HIFU, is one of the most requested skin-tightening treatments in our clinics, and one of the most misunderstood. Clients often arrive expecting either a miracle overnight lift or, at the other extreme, no result at all. The reality sits between the two, and it’s worth understanding before you book.

What HIFU Actually Does

HIFU delivers focused ultrasound energy beneath the skin’s surface, at the same depth a surgical facelift would target, without cutting the skin. That energy heats the tissue to around 60–70°C in tiny, precise points, which triggers your body’s own collagen-production response. The lifting and tightening effect comes from that new collagen forming over the following weeks, not from anything happening in the treatment room itself.

This is the detail that matters most for setting expectations: HIFU is a trigger, not an instant result. If a clinic promises visible lifting the moment you leave, that claim should raise questions.

Who Is a Good Candidate

HIFU tends to suit clients with mild to moderate skin laxity, most commonly along the jawline, under the chin, on the neck, and around the brow. It is not a replacement for a surgical facelift in cases of significant, advanced skin laxity, and we’ll say so plainly at your consultation rather than treating someone whose expectations we can’t meet.

  • Best suited to early-to-moderate sagging, not advanced skin laxity
  • Works well as a preventative treatment in your 30s and 40s
  • Not recommended during pregnancy or over active acne, infections or metal implants in the treatment area
  • Combines well with Radio Frequency or dermal fillers for clients wanting a fuller rejuvenation plan

What Treatment Day Feels Like

Sessions typically run 45–90 minutes depending on the area treated. You’ll feel a warming sensation and small, brief zaps of energy as the device passes over the skin, most clients describe it as tingling or prickling rather than sharply painful. There’s no downtime: you can return to normal activities immediately, though mild redness or tenderness for a day or two is common.

“Results build over 8 to 12 weeks as new collagen forms, that’s the honest timeline we give every client, not the three-day promise you’ll see on some clinic websites.”

A Realistic Results Timeline

  1. Weeks 0–2: Skin may look slightly firmer initially from swelling; this settles quickly and is not the real result.
  2. Weeks 4–8: Early collagen remodelling begins; subtle tightening becomes visible.
  3. Weeks 8–12: Full effect is typically visible, with results continuing to refine for up to six months.

Results generally last 12–18 months, and vary from person to person depending on skin quality, age and lifestyle factors. A single session is often enough for early signs of laxity, while more established laxity may benefit from a follow-up session.

Is HIFU Right for You?

The only way to know is a thorough consultation. We’ll look at your skin, talk through what HIFU can and can’t do for your specific concern, and, if it isn’t the right fit, tell you that too. That’s the same approach we take with every treatment at Derma Care London.
